It is the oldest independent country in Africa. Some historians and archeologists believe that Ethiopia is where human life actually began. It is a rich history filled with royal dynasties, wealth, myths and legends. All major religions from Christianity to Judaism to Islam have religious histories with Ethiopia intertwined in holy traditions and beliefs. To this day the famed Arc of the Covenant lies sealed and protected in Ethiopia by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
The people of Ethiopia are beautiful and majestic. Many are of Egyptian and Portuguese descent they are delicate featured. The official language is Amharic but English is widely spoken with it being taught to children in the primary and secondary schools.
Unfortunately this once royal and powerful nation collapsed under civil unrest and was further hastened by droughts and famine. Unfortunately, disease has further compounded the problems in Ethiopia as a result of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic leaving this country desperately poor. The majority of the population that die from HIV/AIDS or related diseases are middle aged, leaving a lopsided portion of the population as the elderly, or as orphaned children.
There are an estimated 6 million orphans in Ethiopia, a country of 82 million. This number is shocking with disease, poverty, periodic droughts, food insecurity, lack of access to contraception and exceptionally high birthrates in rural areas account for the high numbers of children in desperate need to homes. The good news is that adoption in Ethiopia is affordable and smooth. Infants, toddlers, sibling groups, and young teens are all in great need of loving, forever families they can call their own.

West Sands Adoptions has an NGO license which works in partnership with Hope Arising to provide dental care by US licensed dentists who donate their time and resources to provide much needed care in the outlying community of Dera. In addition, a water project is being constructed to bring a reliable water source to Dera in order to help ease the cruelty of drought which has plagued Ethiopia.
