Adoptive Parent(s) Screening Process
Choosing adoptive parent(s) for your child is one of the most personal and meaningful decisions you'll ever make. It's natural to want reassurance that the people you're considering are truly ready and capable of providing a safe, loving, and stable home for your child.
We understand how important it is to feel confident in the adoptive parent(s) you choose. Understanding the screening process can help you feel informed, empowered, and more at peace with your decision.
Every prospective adoptive parent that applies to adopt a child must first be evaluated by a licensed and experienced adoption professional trained in completing what is called a Home Study Report/Assessment. Prospective adoptive parent(s) are required to participate in, complete, and pass a comprehensive screening process before before being approved to adopt.
At a minimum, each parent must:
-
Have no criminal background
-
Have no history of child abuse or neglect
-
Be in good physical health
-
Be financially stable
-
Live in a safe, child-friendly home with adequate space
-
Provide employment verification and proof of income
-
Submit personal letters of recommendation
-
Complete extensive adoption education and training
We are proud to work with our hopeful/waiting parent(s) who are not only qualified, but are also genuinely loving, committed, and ready to welcome a child into their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions
LEGAL QUESTIONS

Q: Does the baby's father have to be involved?
A: We prefer that he is if possible. Having him involved also makes the adoption more secure. However, if he is not known or won't cooperate, in most cases you can move forward without him. Depending on the state, his rights can be terminated through the court, or he can voluntarily relinquish his rights and not get involved. If you are unmarried and live in Utah, he must register his paternity or else he loses his parental rights to the baby after your relinquishment is signed.

Q: Am I required to have an attorney?
A: If you reside in the States of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah where we hold licenses, there is no need to have attorney represent you unless you would like one. Your adoption caseworker will be there with you to help you sign all of the legal documentation such as relinquishment and consent to adoption documents.

Q: Can I still go through Premier Adoption if I don't reside in Arizona, Nevada, or Utah?
A: If you reside in a state outside of Arizona, Nevada, or Utah, we can still work with you but we partner with other licensed professionals in your state who can help with the legal documents in accordance with the laws of your state.

Q: What is a relinquishment?
A: A relinquishment of parental rights is the legal document you sign after your baby's birth makeing adoption possible.

Q: How soon after my baby is born will I sign relinquishment documents making adoption possible?
A: Every state has different laws governing adoption. In Arizona and Nevada you must wait 72 hours (3 days) after the baby is born to be able to sign relinuqishment documents. In Utah you must wait 24 hours after the baby is born. In all of these states your relinquishment is irrevocable, which means that it is legally binding and you can't change your mind once it has been signed. The legal adoption paperwork will be reviewed with you ahead of time to make sure you understand what is being signed.

Q: Do I need to go to court and appear before a judge?
A: No. Your court appearance is not required unless you or baby's father are member(s) of a federally recognized Native American tribe and the baby is eligible for membership.

Q: I am scared to admit that I used drugs during my pregnancy. If I test positive at the hospital, can I still move forward with an adoption plan with the parents I pick?
A: You can still move forward with your adoption plan. If the baby tests positive, the hospital will likely contact Child Protective Services (CPS) and place a protective hold. This means the baby cannot be taken out of the hospital without the approval of CPS. Once we inform CPS that you are working with us on an adoption plan, they will close the case once we provide them with a signed relinquishment.

Q: Do I get to name my baby?
A: Yes, you have the option to name your baby and fill out a birth certificate at the hospital with the name of your choice. If you decide not to name the baby, the hospital will leave the name blank and identify the baby as "Baby Boy" or "Baby Girl" followed by your last name.
The adoptive parent(s) may decide to keep the name you selected, keep part of it, or give the baby a new name. After the adoption is finalized, the original birth certificate is sealed by the court, and a new birth certificate is issued with the adoptive parent(s) names. Once the original birth certificate is sealed, it cannot be accessed by anyone. If you need a copy of the original birth certificate and didn’t order one at the time of your baby’s birth, we can help provide a photocopy for your records.

Q: What types of financial assistance can be provided to me during my pregnancy?
A: Living expenses (rent, utilities), food and household items, transportation costs, medical co-pays. Contact us and or fill out an an online application and we'll work with you on a plan for financial help.
